Welsh language minister and Blaenau Gwent AM Alun Davies states that the education system in Wales lacks adequate Welsh lessons. The aim of the Welsh education system is to ensure that there will always be speakers of the inherit language. The language is part of the Welsh identity and it is important to ensure children keep learning it. However, progress seems to happen rather slowly and the language is in danger of extinction within the next 100 years. To prevent this from happening the language minister is willing to focus more on this issue to help resolve it as quickly as possible. The shocking statistics show that there are only around 9.000 5-year olds attending an English-Welsh bilingual school. Since the education channel is the only way how children can learn Welsh, this is also the total number of Welsh learners currently.
